FINALS
Player Plus 2007
CLEAN SWEEP FOR FRENCH
![]() |
Leola Jeanjean and Lucas Pouille made it a clean sweep of titles for France in the 2007 Fischer Player Plus tournament at Nottingham on a rain swept finals day.
The girls final saw 10 year old Leola beat her compatriot Clothilda de Bernardi 6-2 6-2 thereby managing to go through the tournament without dropping a set. Her coach, Laurent de Pasqale, was quoted as saying that Leola is the best prospect he has seen in thirty years!
There was British interest in the boy’s singles final after Liam Broady from Lancashire ruthlessly dispatched David Perez of Spain 6-0 6-0 in the semi-final. However Lucas Pouille was too strong for him in the final, winning two tight sets, 6-4 6-4.
Bottlegreen Award
Congratulations to Liam and his coach,Chris Peet, for achieving the best British performance by a boy at the tournament and thereby winning the Bottlegreen Player Plus Tournament Award.
The award is given to the best performance by a British male & female player at the tournament, taking into account the tournament results as well as the players behaviour towards other competitors, coaches and umpires. The winners get the opportunity to play in a Pro-Am at Hurlingham Club on the morning of Wednesday 20th June and the prize includes rail travel, overnight accommodation on the Tuesday night as well as evening meal and breakfast.
The Female prize has been awarded to Anisha Rahman from Yorkshire who lost narrowly to eventual finalist Clothilda de Bernardi at the final round robin stage.
The group two and three finals were all British affairs in both the boys and girls singles. Andy Watt, coach to last year’s boy’s winner George Morgan, was again successful, coaching Beth Askew to the Group 2 title whilst the boy’s title also went north to Conor Bunting, coached by Mark Schofield.
Thanks
Referee Roger Henry and his able team of assistants were up to the challenge that the rain provided and ensured that the tournament ran on schedule. Our thanks to Roger who informs us that next year will be his final year as a referee and I am sure he will be sorely missed!
The tournament this year was sponsored by Fischer and our thanks go to them and our other sponsors, Bottlegreen and Wilson, for their support this year.
A special mention should be made for the Nottingham Tennis Centre team led by Richard Joyner, without whose help the tournament would not be possible.
